Eastlake geared up for Skyline

Could the storyline be any better?

Undefeated rivals Eastlake and Skyline, about a mile apart on the Sammamish Plateau, play tonight at Skyline in the regular-season finale with the KingCo 4A Conference football title on the line.

Wait, yes it could.

Eastlake's first-year coach, Gene Dales, was Skyline's defensive coordinator the last four years. Dales and Skyline coach Steve Gervais are good friends who played football together at Oregon State in the 1970s. The coaches on their staffs are good friends. Both teams are 8-0.

"I really cared for those guys," Dales said of Skyline's coaches and players. "I loved being part of the Skyline program. I just wanted to be in charge of my own."

But "it's not the coaches against each other," Dales added.

Eighth-ranked Eastlake will have to contend with second-ranked Skyline's conference-best offense, which averages more than 46 points. Dales says his team must run, grind the clock down and keep the Spartans' offense off the field.

But it won't be easy against Skyline's defense, which has surrendered a KingCo-low 7.75 points per game.

"The key to the game?" Dales mused. "Don't let them score 50."
