No. 1 Gonzaga Prep rallies past Eastlake

SPOKANE3 With its defense dominating and a 20-point lead, it appeared the Eastlake football team was on the way to the Class 4A state semifinals.

But top-ranked Gonzaga Prep marched the length of the field three times in the fourth quarter and scored the game-winning touchdown with 19 seconds left to defeat the Wolves 21-20 on Saturday in a quarterfinal game.

"I felt our defense had dominated and dictated the tempo of the game for the first three quarters," Eastlake coach Gene Dales said. "To their credit, they were able to execute. That wasn't something that had happened to us all year."

The Wolves (9-3) scored on a pair of touchdown passes by Ryan Robertson. He found Eric Hill for a 60-yard strike in the second quarter and tossed a 20-yard touchdown to Justin Helwege in the third quarter.

Late in the third quarter, Tanor Johnson ran an interception back 32 yards for a touchdown to put Eastlake up 20-0.

But Gonzaga's Max Manix led three touchdown drives and found Phil Joy from 4 yards out on third-and-goal to take the lead for good.

"Our kids played very, very hard and we took it to them the first three quarters," Dales said. "It's unfortunate how it ended."
